Spur Gear Calculator Review

This suite of calculators, developed collaboratively by SpiralArm Consulting Limited and Gear Services (Letchworth) Limited, provides essential functionality for calculating the outside diameter, center distance, and gear ratio of spur gears and pinions. It is important to emphasize that these tools are exclusively tailored for spur gears and pinions, and should not be utilized for helical gears.

Originally designed to complement the spur gears and pinions offered on the Ultrascale website, this application is versatile enough to accommodate spur gears and pinions from various manufacturers.

Gear Systems

The calculators operate using two distinct gear systems: Diametral Pitch and Module. They are based on standard full-depth tooth profiles. The calculators automatically convert the currently set tooth size when switching between these gear systems. For instance, if the tools are set to Diametral Pitch with a tooth size of 100, switching to Module will convert this value to its equivalent in Module (0.254), and vice versa.

Outside Diameter Calculator

This calculator determines the outside diameter of a spur gear, ensuring that the returned value corresponds to a correctly sized gear.

Center Distance Calculator

This tool calculates the center distance between two mating spur gears, providing a measurement that reflects tight meshing of the gears.

Ratio Calculator

Persistent Input Data

Users have the option to save input data across all calculators for future use. Additionally, there is flexibility to preset parameters such as Gear System, Tooth Size, and Number of Teeth. Access to both preset data and saved entries can be found via the toolbar at the top of each individual calculator.

The top button bar offers the following functionalities:

• 'Default' - Loads input fields with preset data from the 'Data Entry Defaults' section.
• 'Select' - Displays a list of saved input data that can be easily loaded into the fields by selection.
• 'Save' - Saves the currently displayed input data for future reference via the 'Select' option.

'Copy to' Menu

The 'Copy to' menu becomes active upon completion of a calculation, allowing users to effortlessly transfer results to other calculators and their corresponding fields without manual entry. This feature enhances usability and efficiency within the application.
